Who can be baptized?
Since both believers and their children are included in God's covenant love, we at First Miami baptize both the children of believers or adults coming to faith for the first time. When children are baptized, we celebrate God's love that extends to us even before we are born; when adults are baptized, we celebrate the importance of the response and decision of the individual that God's grace has inspired.
When do baptisms take place?
Baptism at First Miami always take place on the Lord’s Day during an ordinary service of worship. Baptisms occur after the teaching near the end of the service.
What happens during the baptism service?
All baptizands will be called up to the stage and invited to stand near the baptism font. A minister will enact the baptism liturgy and ask the adult to be baptized three questions: (1) Do you desire to be baptized? (2) Do you turn from sin and to Christ as your Lord and Savior? and (3) Will you seek to be Christ’s disciple and follow him all the days of your life? Upon answering in the affirmative to these questions, adults will be asked to kneel and receive water on their head in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. A prayer and blessing offered.
When children are baptized, these questions are directed to the believing parent(s): (1) Do you desire that your child be baptized? (2) In your own life will you continue to submit to Christ as your Lord and Savior and seek to be his faithful disciple? and (3) Will you raise your child in a way where she/he will come to know the love and truth of God and the Christian faith? Upon answering in the affirmative, a minister will apply water to the baby’s head in the name of the Trinity and offer a prayer and blessing upon the child.
At what age should my child be baptized? When should I get baptized?
Our denomination's Book of Order says, “without undue haste, and without undue delay.” In other words, whenever you feel the the time is right. Once a child reaches an age where the parents believe that the child can answer the baptism questions affirmatively and understand them, we typically treat them like an adult in that case.
How far in advance do I need to schedule a baptism?
At least two weeks are needed to schedule a baptism. If a service of worship is already full or an ordained minister is not available that day, an opportunity for baptism may not be available.
What about Godparents?
Godparents are welcome to participate in a baptism but are not expected or required. If a child is being baptized and the parents wish to invite Godparents to join them, then the Godparents will be asked the following question: “Do you promise to assist the parents in keeping their promise to raise the child in a way where she/he will come to know the love and truth of God and the Christian faith?"
Do I need to attend any classes to be baptized?
If you are already a member of First Miami and wish to have your child baptized, nothing more is required. If you are not a member, once you fill out the "Request Information" form above, you will be contacted and an appointment will be set up with a minister who will get to know you and talk about baptism.

How many times should I be baptized?
Our church does not “re-baptize” since we understand baptism primarily as inclusion into God’s family and not simply as an opportunity for repentance. In other words, once you have been adopted into God’s family, God’s faithfulness and mercy are so deep and wide that it’s impossible to need to “start over” again.
Does your church do dedications?
Yes. Please indicate on the "Baptism Request" form above that you are interested in dedication.
Can I Use My Own Pastor?
This special request must be handled by one of our ministers and is not ordinarily done.
